Employers/New Applicants/Licensees


New licenses are posted to this site immediately when a license is issued and the licensee is valid to start practicing. Photo ID License Cards and Renewal stickers are no longer being issued. If you need to verify a license please click "Verify License" where you may view or print a copy for your records. You do not need to "log in" to verify a license. These verifications print in a certificate format and meet all JACHO requirements.

To ensure you receive important updates, including renewal reminders, please keep your email and contact information up to date in your online portal.

Online Licensure Application

What You’ll Need:
For LRTC (Certified) or LRTR (Registered) Applicants:
  • Proof of Education – Official transcript or diploma from an approved respiratory care program.
  • NBRC Credentials – Original certificate or official “Statement of Credentials” from the NBRC.
  • Photo ID – Driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued ID.
  • 5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
For Student Temporary Permit Applicants:
  • Proof of Enrollment – Transcript from an approved respiratory care program.
  • Photo ID – Driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued ID.
  • Employer Affidavit.
  • Educational Affidavit.
File Submission Recommendation:
Whenever possible, please upload all required documents as a single file (e.g., ApplicationDocuments.pdf or ApplicationDocuments.docx). Note: HEIC format is not currently supported.

Reinstating an Expired or Inactive License

  1. Log in using your email as your User ID.
  2. Click Reinstate and select Reinstatement at the top.
  3. Complete the form and attach all required documentation.

Miscellaneous credit card payments can be made here. If making a payment, print the receipt and include it with your application or request.

Verifying a License
Licenses are posted immediately once issued and are valid for practice. Photo ID license cards are no longer issued, but we can provide sealed verification documents upon request. To confirm a practitioner’s license, visit Verify License to view or print an official record. These verifications meet JCAHO requirements.

Continuing Education (CEU) & License Renewal Information
All LRTC and LRTR licenses expire at midnight on December 31, 2025. Renewals will become available on the online portal on November 1, 2025.

  • November 1 – November 30, 2025: $55 (Early Renewal Rate)
  • December 1 – December 31, 2025: $65
CEU Requirements - (2025 is not a CEU Reporting Year.)
20 CEUs are required between October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2026.
CEUs must be listed in the online portal prior to the 2026 renewal. (uploading documentation is encouraged and may be uploaded as a single file).
Carryover Hours: If carryover CEUs do not auto-populate, manually enter them as “carryover hours.”

WVBORC Legislative Updates

Series 1: Criteria for Licensure/Emergency Rule
This change will provide CRT credentialed therapists who have earned their CRT after July 1, 2022, the opportunity to work in the State of West Virginia for 12 months and obtain job experience in further preparation to take and pass the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) examination of which they have been academically prepared to pass. The Emergency Rule took effect on October 11, 2024. Please note, this rule does not affect the current Licensed Respiratory Therapist Certified who have obtained their CRT credentials before July 1, 2022.

Series 9: Student Temporary Permit – Amended
This amended rule went into effect on May 18, 2024. The rule broadens the scope of the Student Temporary Permit. Please note the Educational Facility Affidavit and Employer's Statement forms have been updated to reflect the changes in this rule. Please click here for the updated application.

Series 11: Telehealth Practice; Requirements; Definitions
A new rule has been filed with the West Virginia Secretary of State to expand on the Telehealth practice, requirements, and definitions.

Visiting the WVBORC Office

Appointments are requested for office visits. Please schedule in advance by calling 304-558-1382 or emailing wvborc@wv.gov. A dropbox is available for document submissions when the office is closed.
Office Closures: Closed on all state-recognized holidays.
